    Stop abstinence-only programs in Austin

    December 31, 2011

    Advocates for Youth

    Dear Patti-

My name is Mackenzie. I am 20 years old, and I'm from Texas — a state which has the fourth highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation.

Growing up, I heard many of my friends talking about sex and getting things horribly wrong. In middle school, I was told by a teacher that we wouldn't be discussing condoms in health class, and I have been an advocate for comprehensive sex education ever since.

In a country where 95% of people have sex before marriage, abstinence-only-until-marriage programs are not only unrealistic, they are dangerous. We need to provide information and options for young people so that they can act responsibly and protect themselves.

For the past four years, I have received training and support from Advocates for Youth and its partner, the Texas Freedom Network. Putting these skills to use, I was recently elected Secretary of the Austin Independent School District School Health Advisory Council, which makes recommendations to the local school board about health policy and curricula.

We successfully prevented an abstinence-only-until-marriage program from being implemented in Austin, and now thousands of students will receive medically accurate sex education to help them make healthy and responsible decisions. Young people are capable of making responsible decisions about our health and lives — but politicians, teachers, and adults in our communities need to live up to their responsibility to give us all the information we need to do so.

I also recently helped organize the first-ever youth lobby day for sex education in Texas where we trained 75 other young activists how to talk to our representatives about sex education reform. It's time for elected officials to start making responsible decisions about the policies that affect young people's lives — and it's up to all of us to pressure them into doing the right thing.

If it weren't for Advocates for Youth, I would not have been able to do any of this.

Advocates provided me with the training, skills, and resources I needed to accomplish my goals.

That's why I'm asking you to make a donation today.

No matter how much you give, you can know that you'll be making a difference in the lives of thousands of young people like me.

    Donate now.

Thank you for listening to my story and the stories of those who came before me. Your support is much appreciated.

    Best wishes in 2012!

    Mackenzie

Pflag SD chapter founder dies at 95 article by Ben Cartwright

Lillian Rubin, a founder of PFLAG San Diego, dies at 95

SAN DIEGO -- Lillian Rubin, one of the founders of the San Diego chapter of PFLAG, died in her sleep at midnight on Sunday, Dec. 4, according to PFLAG San Diego. She was 95.

Shortly after her son came out, Rubin, along with her husband Hy, learned about PFLAG. The two attended a meeting in Los Angeles, and are said to have become "hooked on PFLAG."

PFLAG -- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays -- is an organization that works to promote the health and well-being of LGBT people and their family and friends through support, education and advocacy. Founded in 1973, the organization has grown to have over 200,000 members and supporters with over 350 affiliates across the country.

The Lambda Archives of San Diego reports that the first meeting PFLAG meeting held in San Diego took place on Dec. 12, 1982, although, according to PFLAG, it took some time to get the chapter up and running after Rubin's first encounter with the organization in LA.

"After several successful attempts to start a chapter in San Diego, parents and families and friends finally began to 'come out,' and in 1982, San Diego County PFLAG was started," PFLAG wrote in an article about Rubin's death.

The organization has grown from a handful of members in its early days to nearly 300 today.

Upon founding the local chapter, Rubin had little experience to the LGBT community, but she was said to dive right into it. Fellow PFLAG members recall Lillian proudly marching in San Diego's annual LGBT Pride Parade on many occasions and her regular speaking
on LGBT issues not only to the media, but at various educational and civic institutions throughout Southern California. Friends say that she even received a commendation for her work from the Mayor of Los Angeles at one point.

In a statement, members of the current PFLAG San Diego board said that they were saddened to hear of the passing of their chapter's founder.

"She was and continues to be an inspiration for all of us newer and other more senior board members, and we send our condolences to her family and a promise that her spirit will continue to be remembered by our actions in furthering a safe and enlightened world for our loved ones."

"Lillian won the admiration of thousands whom she motivated and moved on sharing her knowledge of LGBT issues."

Those who wish to make a donation to PFLAG in memory of Rubin may send a check to: PFLAG San Diego, P.O. 82762, San Diego, CA 92138. Note "Lillian Rubin" in the memo line.

    : The gift of Freedom

    Subject: The gift of Freedom

    Dear friends

The math is simple but the asylum system is not, particularly if you are a LGBT refugee.

$25 x 400 people =$10,000 =freedom for Joseph Bukombe who has spent the last 2 years in a San Diegan prison rather than return to Uganda.

We can secure his immediate release to his friends, a job, a home and a fresh legal process to grant him asylum here.

An event is being planned next Thursday at LifeHOUSE in San Diego to raise the funds needed and if he is successful the $10,000 will be used to help a second victim of Ugandan abuse who will arrive here next year. Your gift may be a double blessing and a means of raising the voices of thousands of LGBT people globally.

    Here is the link. http://CompasstoCompassion.eventbee.com/event?eid=869055313

If you cannot be with us next week, please join the groundswell of support for Joseph and the issues he represents. Donations are tax deductible.

    Blessings
