Documentary "The life of Bayard Rustin" at Lgbt Center

discussion of the documentary Brother Outsider:

The Life of Bayard Rustin Who is Bayard Rustin?

Rustin was a true visionary strategist and activist who has been called "the unknown hero" of the civil rights movement. A disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin defiantly dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Bayard Rustin's birth, and we will mark the occasion by screening the breathtaking documentary Brother Outsider.

This screening will bring Rustin's inspiring story to new audiences in the San Diego area. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and its national broadcasts on PBS' P.O.V. series and Logo, Brother Outsider has introduced millions of viewers around the world to his life and work.

SUBJECT: GREAT NEWS FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS OF PFLAG!

GREAT NEWS FOR  SPANISH SPEAKERS OF PFLAG!

    Convention in Lima Peru 2013

I am so excited to let you all know about this wonderful convention in June of 2013 in Lima, Peru.
It's from the group called International Association of Sexually Diverse Families
and I was lucky enough to attend this in Chile 3 years ago.

This is an event in Spanish with panels and workshops for 3 days and it culminates with all the representatives there from all the countries marching in Lima's Gay Pride parade.

For me three years ago that was the most exciting thing (other than the birth of my children) that I have ever experienced. I met wonderful people that I keep in touch and share articles with all over the world.
If you have Spanish speakers in your groups or have an interest in forming a Spanish speaking group please contact me or Nila Marrone.

If there is a person that wants to attend but needs help, we have scholarships that they can apply for through Nila at nilamarrone@gmail.com

Walgreens coupons help safe schools program

CULTIVATING RESPECT: SAFE SCHOOLS FOR ALL

San Diego PFLAG is participating with other PFLAG chapters nationwide to raise money for PFLAG's "Cultivating Respect: Safe Schools for All."  The program provides support, education, and advocacy to students, parents, families, friends, and educators to help them create a learning environment that is conducive to the educational success of all students. PFLAG chapters are working in their communities to work directly with schools and their stakeholders to provide support, resources, training, model policy and creative programs to create this environment of respect.

To accomplish these goals, PFLAG is teaming up with Johnson and Johnson Family of Consumer Companies and Walgreens to raise money toward the program. These two  companies launched Care with Pride™  to support the program which helps fight bullying in schools and make them safe for all students. Betty DeGeneres (Ellen's mom) helped PFLAG launch the Care with Pride™   campaign.

A frightening statistic is that half of all children are bullied at some point in their school years, including 90 percent of LGBT youth.

THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN DO (PLEASE).  If you are attending the Pride Parade, be sure to get one of the booklets entitled "Top Ten Ways to Help Make Schools Safer For All Students." The booklet contains $65 in coupons and rebates from 20 brands within the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies brands.  For each coupon and rebate redeemed at Walgreens, Johnson and Johnson will donate $1.00 toward the program.

Everyone marching with the PFLAG contingent will be asked to hand out the booklets. They will also be available at our PFLAG booth at the Festival. If you want to get an early start, and we hope you do, go to www.walgreens.com/pride to print the coupons.
