discussion of the documentary Brother Outsider:
The Life of Bayard Rustin Who is Bayard Rustin?
Rustin was a true visionary strategist and activist who has been called "the unknown hero" of the civil rights movement. A disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin defiantly dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Bayard Rustin's birth, and we will mark the occasion by screening the breathtaking documentary Brother Outsider.
This screening will bring Rustin's inspiring story to new audiences in the San Diego area. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and its national broadcasts on PBS' P.O.V. series and Logo, Brother Outsider has introduced millions of viewers around the world to his life and work.
