Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Teens Singled out for Punishment

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2010) — Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adolescents are about 40 percent more likely than other teens to be punished by school authorities, police and the courts, according to a study by Yale University researchers. Published in the January 2011 issue of the journal Pediatrics, the study is the first to document excessive punishment of LGB youth nationwide.

"We found that virtually all types of punishment -- including school expulsions, arrests, juvenile convictions, adult convictions and especially police stops -- were more frequently meted out to LGB youth," said lead author Kathryn Himmelstein, who initiated the study while she was a Yale undergraduate. The research was supervised by Hannah Brueckner, professor of sociology and co-director of the Center for Research on Inequalities and the Life Course at Yale.

The study was based on the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) and included about 15,000 middle and high school students who were followed for seven years into early adulthood. The study collected details on participants' sexuality, including feelings of sexual attraction, sexual relationships and self-labeling as LGB. Add Health also surveyed participants about how frequently they engaged in a variety of misbehaviors, ranging in severity from lying to parents, to using a weapon. Add Health included detailed questions about school expulsions and contacts with the criminal justice system...

This Sunday at 2:30, we will view together the moving 85-minute DVD of Pastor James Swilley's coming out to his Greater Atlanta mega-church congregation. So many of the issues that the Christian church is talking about today regarding homosexuality he addresses in his hour-long explanation. Near the end, his wife and partner in ministry--as well as several others--also speak to those present.

Then, we will wish Godspeed, and Advent and Christmas blessings to you and yours until we meet again on January 16, 2011.

The Senate may vote today on whether or not to repeal the military's failed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. This may be our last, best hope to end this discrimination before the new Congress shows up in January, with the House under staunchly anti-LGBT leadership.

North Park Toyland parade Saturday December 4 @ 10 am

Join Family Matters and San Diego Pride as we walk in the North Park Toyland Parade. Afterwards there will be a pizza party at the Pride office, which is walking distance from the parade. 

Decorate your wagons and strollers and let's show our Family Pride to the community. We will meet between 10 & 10:30 am to line up for the parade, whichbegins at 11 am and should conclude at about 12:15 pm. The parade will go on rain or shine.

"Abomination," the film, shown this Sunday at 2:30 (a critical look at the ex-gay movement)

This Sunday, December 5, we will view the short documentary DVD by Dr. Alicia Salzer and Anat Solomon entitled Abomination: Homosexuality and the Ex-Gay Movement.

We also will examine the pastoral letter from the general superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene that seems to set a new tone toward homosexuality in the denomination.

Abomination focuses on sexual orientation conversion therapies, sometimes called "reparative therapy." Such therapies have been criticized by mainstream mental health professionals for the harm they cause and for their practitioners' overstated claims of success. Nevertheless, these "treatments" are increasingly promoted by conservative faith communities across the US. This documentary film is a sobering counterpoint to the hopes marketed by the ex-gay movement.
